Solo: A Star Wars Story will premiere at Cannes

We recently heard about two big things that won’t be at the Cannes Film Festival this year (specifically red carpet selfies and Netflix movies that qualify for competition), but now Deadline has the scoop on something that will be seen at Cannes: Solo: A Star Wars Story. According to the site’s sources, Ron Howard’s Star Wars spin-off will be making its debut at a special Cannes screening on May 15—just 10 days before its global premiere on May 25. The rest of the schedule is mostly being kept under wraps, and Disney wouldn’t give Deadline a comment on the report, but it seems like any Star Wars fans who are anxious about Solo after its many behind-the-scenes issues will have a chance to hear from Cannes attendees before they start lining up outside their local theaters.

Solo aside, Cannes has confirmed that the opening-night film will be Asghar Farhadi’s Everybody Knows, starring Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz.

UPDATE, 4/6/2018: Vanity Fair film critic Richard Lawson shared the description of Solo in the official Cannes announcement about the screening on Twitter, and it is très charmante:
