Andrew Huang is a musician who’s unafraid of a gimmicky musical challenge, whether that’s recreating the Breaking Bad theme using only meth lab equipment or making a rap song without using any vowels except “e.” In his latest “song challenge,” he covers Nena’s 1983 hit “99 Red Balloons” using red balloons and samples of the various noises he can eke out of a few inches of stretched rubber.
“Does this type of music have a genre name?” YouTube commenter TheMadsC19 asks.
A valid question, though “song covers using solely materials listed in the originals’ titles,” may not be ready to be considered its own “genre” yet. That said, here are some other ’80s hits that might be worthy candidates for the treatment: “Sledgehammer,” “When Doves Cry,” “Another Brick In The Wall (Part 2),” “Bette Davis Eyes.”
