Sonic The Hedgehog sprints to "Gangsta's Paradise" in madcap first trailer
The first teaser poster for the live-action Sonic The Hedgehog movie was weird, with Sonic looking like a weird guy in a big mascot suit. Then, the second teaser poster was also weird, with Sonic filming his route through San Francisco at an…odd angle. Surely it would all look better in context though, right? With Sonic running around, dropping quips, and chomping on chili dogs?
Well, yes and no. The long-legged CGI Sonic is decidedly Bueller-esque, and his quips about Fitbit are as forehead-smacking as the “Gangsta’s Paradise” cover underscoring his antics. Still, the hammy mugging of Jim Carrey’s mustached Dr. Robotnik is put to good use here, illustrating a madcap tone that should well satiate its pint-sized audience. It helps, too, that Sonic’s blurry propulsions look on point, and that James Marsden, here playing a small-town sheriff, looks like a solid, straight-laced foil to Ben Schwartz’s hyper-caffeinated voice work.
Here’s a plot synopsis:
Sonic The Hedgehog is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centers on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound—human—best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.
