Sony is going deeper Into The Spider-Verse with a sequel and a female-led spin-off

Sony’s animated Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse won’t even be released until December 14, but the overwhelmingly positive response to the trailers has apparently convinced the studio to start moving forward with even more animated Spidey movies. It’s a little early to say that Sony is back on its old Spider-Man bullshit of running successful franchises directly into the ground, but The Hollywood Reporter says that Sony Pictures Animation is moving forward with both a Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse sequel and a spin-off dedicated to the women of the Spider-Verse.

We don’t know much about the sequel, but THR said that “seeds have been planted” for it in the first movie—which, again, isn’t even out yet. Whatever it’s about, it’ll be directed by Avatar: The Last Airbender and Netflix Voltron veteran Joaquim Dos Santos. We at least know slightly more about the spin-off, which is coming from Lauren Montgomery (whose work you may also recognize from Voltron). It’ll center around the female heroes of the Spider-Man universe, which presumably means we’ll see a lot of Spider-Gwen. It also might mean we’ll see the big-screen debut of Jessica Drew, a.k.a. Spider-Woman, and relative newcomer Silk (who was bitten by the same spider that got Peter and was then trapped in a bunker for a few years).

Now, just so we’re all on the same page, Sony has Into The Spider-Verse, another Tom Holland Spider-Man movie, Jared Leto’s Morbius, a probable Venom sequel, Into The Spider-Verse 2, the Spider-Gwen spin-off, and the now-separated Silver Sable and Black Cat movies. That’s even more than what we know about the future of Marvel Studios, so yeah, maybe Sony is back on its Spider-Man bullshit.
