Sony is making a Goosebumps sequel

Much like a spooky mask that just keeps coming back no matter how many times you try to get rid of the thing, it looks like Sony’s Goosebumps movie is getting a sequel. This comes from The Hollywood Reporter, which says that the studio is in the middle of “closing deals” to bring back Darren Lemke and Rob Letterman, who wrote and directed the first movie (respectively). THR notes that the original Goosebumps wasn’t a “massive hit,” but it “has performed well in home entertainment circles,” so Sony must’ve figured that making another one would be easier than coming up with a new idea.

Jack Black, who starred in the first movie as a fictionalized version of Goosebumps author R.L. Stine, hasn’t officially signed on yet, but apparently “the goal is to have him return for the sequel.” Now, having the main guy from the movie come back for its sequel is a pretty revolutionary idea, but if it doesn’t work out they could just replace Black with somebody else and have the Stine character wear one of those aforementioned spooky masks for the whole movie. That way, the carefully balanced continuity of the Goosebumps universe will remain intact.
