Sony is no longer taking Michael Peña’s The Bringing
We haven’t heard a whole lot about horror film The Bringing, other than that Nicolas Winding Refn almost directed it a few years ago and that Ant-Man scene-stealer Michael Peña will star in it, but now Deadline is reporting that Columbia Pictures and parent company Sony Pictures Entertainment have dropped the project. Plus, not only is The Bringing now without a studio, but Deadline also notes that it has lost formerly attached director Jeremy Lovering as well. There’s no word on any other studios interested in picking up The Bringing.
The film is based on the true story of a woman named Elisa Lam whose body was found in the water tank on the roof of the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles in 2013. An unsettling video of Lam behaving erratically in an elevator on the night she died helped the story go viral, with countless varyingly tasteless theories as to what happened to her spreading around. Perhaps Sony and Columbia were a bit put off by how weird it is to make a horror movie about a real woman who died only a few years ago under relatively mysterious circumstances, but we have no idea.
