Sony pays over 50 million dollars for rights to Michael Jackson film
Death continues to be a great career move for Michael Jackson. Since his mysterious, little-reported passing his album sales have been skyrocketing, his public image has largely been rehabilitated, he's once again the most famous, talked about person in the world and now Sony, a label whose leadership Jackson once likened to the Anti-Christ, is paying over fifty million dollars for the rights to a Jackson film that will draw heavily on recent footage of the controversial superstar rehearsing for his ill-fated comeback tour.
According to Variety, choreographer-turned-filmmaker Kenny Ortega will direct. Even with all the hoopla surrounding Jackson's death Sony's taking a big risk: the film will have to be one of the top-grossing documentary or performance films of all time in order to turn a profit, though it's sure to make a mint on DVD.
