Sony to begin selling virtual reality headsets next year
Sony announced Tuesday at the Game Developers Conference that it would be soon be bringing virtual reality glasses to the market. Consistent with regulations requiring that VR glasses be given super-dorky names, the project is currently code-named Project Morpheus. Presumably as an attempt to interest people in staring at something besides its hacked emails, Sony plans to put the goggles on sale in the first half of 2016.
Sony actually debuted the headset last year, but the Playstation 4-compatible peripherals have some noticeable improvements. These updates include a larger screen, bigger field of vision, more comfortable weighting, and 120 fps. The Morpheus goggles also boast nine exterior LED lights for tracking movement, like high-fiving virtual friends while you sit alone in your darkened living room.
“Our goal with VR is to deliver a sense of presence, making the player feel as though they’ve stepped inside the world of a game,” said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony’s computer division. No price has been given, so it’s still impossible to tell if Project Morpheus will make the player feel as though they’ve paid a ton of money for a glorified paperweight that isn’t compatible with any good games.
