Soon, you’ll be invited to Muriel’s Wedding The Musical
It’s looking ever more likely that every film will be adapted for TV—and vice versa—with the occasional live production of such properties thrown in for good measure. 2016’s had a virtual bumper crop of adaptations of the latter, including plans for a True Blood musical, and a forthcoming Cheers play. And now, for the ABBA fans out there who weren’t satiated by Mamma Mia’s long theater run or its film adaptation, Deadline reports that there’s a Muriel’s Wedding musical in the works.
Global Creatures, which already has a Moulin Rouge! Broadway musical in the works, will soon invite Sydney residents to dance and jive at the Muriel’s Wedding musical next year. (And how could we ever refuse? We feel like we win when we lose.) The original Australian film starred Toni Collette as Muriel (or Mariel) and Rachel Griffiths as Rhonda, two kindred spirits and ABBA fans whose friendship is tested by the former’s obsession with marriage. Writer-director P.J. Hogan is adapting his own work for the stage, with Australian theater director Simon Phillips (Priscilla Queen Of The Desert) helming the production. Muriel’s Wedding The Musical is expected to debut in November 2017.
