South Park trolls old targets like Church Of Scientology with mobile billboards

If you have yet to find yourself personally offended by something or other on South Park, then you probably haven’t been tuning in. Because show creators and writers Trey Parker and Matt Stone have hit just about every political, religious, and social group over the past 19 years. To celebrate that fact, the bigwigs at Comedy Central have been sending mobile billboards bearing images of memorable scenes of the real-world locations of notable offenses. For example, they sent a billboard from the season 9 episode “Trapped In The Closet”—which needles Tom Cruise over his religion and rumors of his sexuality—to the Church Of Scientology HQ in Los Angeles.

“We knew it was risky,” Comedy Central’s CMO Walter Levitt admitted to The Hollywood Reporter. “We knew some locations might not be pleased to have us out there, but we thought this is a perfect way to celebrate everything the series has covered in its 19 seasons.”

And they were right. In fact, billboards in front of the Church Of Scientology, the White House, and the Lincoln Memorial were firmly asked to get lost. “In some cases, the locals were not pleased to have us outside their locations and asked us to leave, but that was all expected, and we completely understand why,” Levitt said.

South Park commenced its 20th season on September 14.
