Comic book movies remain very much in vogue, so Todd McFarlane’s announced reboot of his Spawn franchise-in-the-making is really just a drop in the bucket. It doesn’t matter that there’s no real clamor for it, or that Mark A.Z. Dippé’s previous film made for an ignominious debut. Hey, if the X-Men franchise could right itself after X-Men: The Last Stand, then maybe McFarlane’s got a shot. At the very least, he really wants to do it, as evinced by his recent promotion of the undertaking at Emerald City Comic-Con.
Twitch recorded McFarlane playing to his Spawn devotees at the convention, where he revealed that his reboot will keep with the current trend of “dark” reimagining: “Listen, I’m going to paint it for you. The movie is going to be a dark R … If here’s PG-13 and here’s Deadpool and here’s Logan, we’re going to be here. It’s going to be dark. It’s going to be nasty.” Frankly, we’d expect no less from a reboot of a movie where John Leguizamo waddled around looking like this. But the “dark” moniker does jibe with his previously shared plans for the new film, which envision Spawn as more of a “boogeyman” than “a dude in a rubber suit.”
There’s currently no production start date for this Spawn reboot, so for now, you’ll have to make do with Deadpool and Logan.
