Spectacular Optical to reopen for business: Videodrome remake in the works

David Cronenberg's mindbending 1983 movie Videodrome is getting a remake and a makeover courtesy of screenwriter Ehren Kruger. Kruger, best known for writing Arlington Road, and the American remake of The Ring and its sequel (and, um, Reindeer Games) will write and co-produce the film for Universal, according to Variety. So will the remake retain Cronenberg's uncompromising, Philip K. Dick-inspired hallucinatory qualities? Maybe!:

The original "Videodrome" starred James Woods as the head of Civic TV Channel 83, who makes his station relevant by programming "Videodrome," a series that depicts torture and murder that transfixes viewers.

The new picture will modernize the concept, infuse it with the possibilities of nano-technology and blow it up into a large-scale sci-fi action thriller.

More importantly, which of today's pop stars could fill the Debbie Harry self-destructive, S&M-loving femme fatale role? (We're guessing Amy Winehouse is not an option.)
