When we first reported on Spike Lee’s upcoming film Chiraq, not much was known about it besides that Lee wanted Kanye West and Common to star, and that it would be produced by Amazon studios. Now, it looks like at least half of Lee’s casting wish list is coming true: Screendaily reports the film is set to star West and Jennifer Hudson, and, in an even weirder twist, is a “comedy musical” reimagining of the ancient Greek comedy Lysistrata.
The original play—written by Aristophanes, often described as the Spike Lee of his time—is the story of every woman in Greece deciding to withhold sex from all men until they put an end to the Peloponnesian War. The new iteration will presumably entail Kim Kardashian withholding sex from Kanye until he puts an end to his feud with the proper usage of the word “surprise.” The movie is also scheduled to co-star John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, and despite the deal with Amazon, is still planning to be released in theaters.
Perhaps this will be the film that finally snaps the great director’s recent wobbly streak. Or maybe it will just be remembered as the time that Kanye West made the mistake of thinking he could act. The rapper certainly knows from Spike Lee joints, given that he is the fly Malcolm X, buying any jeans necessary.
