Spike Lee will direct a She’s Gotta Have It series for Netflix
After dipping his toe into the waters of Amazon for his 2015 film Chi-Raq, Spike Lee is now going to give another streaming service a try with a TV remake of his breakout feature She’s Gotta Have It. According to Deadline, Netflix has ordered 10 episodes of a She’s Gotta Have It series, with Lee set to direct all of the episodes himself. The original film starred Tracy Camilla Johns as a young woman living in Brooklyn named Nola Darling who enjoys juggling her three lovers and doing whatever she can to embrace her freedom (mostly by having lots of sex).
Lee released a statement about the series, saying:
We are getting an opportunity to revisist these memorable characters who will still be relevant and avant-garde three decades later. With all that said it was my wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, producer in her own oright, who had the vision to take my film from the big screen and turn it into an episodic series. It had not occurred to me at all. Tonya saw it plain as day. I didn’t.
She’s Gotta Have It will be Lee’s first TV project, with the series first going into development way back in 2014.
