Spike renews Lip Sync Battle
Spike has renewed Lip Sync Battle—the LL Cool J-hosted game show produced by Jimmy Fallon, Stephen Merchant, and John Krasinski—for a 20-episode second season, Variety reports. Inspired by the segment from Fallon’s Tonight Show, Lip Sync Battle pits celebrities against one another in a two-round voiceless competition for the coveted prize of an obscenely large lip sync champion belt. Only four episodes in, Lip Sync Battle is already the most-watched scripted program in Spike history, averaging 3 million total viewers.
Why are so many people watching celebrities move their mouths to music? Because Lip Sync Battle might just secretly be the best show on television. The first season has already given us some truly beautiful moments, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson bouncing to “Shake It Off” and referring to Taylor Swift as “TayTay,” Emily Blunt impersonating Janis Joplin, and Anne Hathaway swinging on a wrecking ball, which is the series’s most popular YouTube clip. Lip syncing might not require any real talent, but commitment to the bit is the name of the game, and these stars come ready to throw down. Anna Kendrick even beat Krasinski on his own show by stealing his girl and bringing in Jennifer Lopez for an assist.
If Lip Sync Battle can accomplish all that in four episodes, imagine what it can do with 20. While production details, participants, and a premiere date have yet to be announced, we’re hoping Vin Diesel makes the cut. After all, he‘s already proven his abilities in a solo lip sync battle. Meanwhile, we’re still not 100 percent sure what Chrissy Teigen’s job as “color commentator”/bartender entails, but her reaction faces are a very underrated component of the show.
