Spotlight director to helm two episodes of Selena Gomez’s Netflix drama

Tom McCarthy, who is somehow the director of both Spotlight and The Cobbler, has signed on to direct the first two episodes of the Selena Gomez-produced Netflix series 13 Reasons Why, according to Deadline. Based on Jay Asher’s 2007 debut novel of the same name, the show retrospectively follows the life of Hannah Baker, a high school student who committed suicide and left behind cassette tapes for 12 of her peers explaining how they each contributed to her decision. Joy Gorman of Anonymous Content produced Spotlight and then brought 13 Reasons Why to McCarthy, maybe with a note that read, “This is terribly depressing, so I thought of you. XO.” Gorman and McCarthy will executive produce along with Gomez, who is currently not set to appear in the series.
