St. Vincent loves football, plays “The Star-Spangled Banner” in new NFL ad

Annie Clark, the indie rock icon better known as St. Vincent, has been known to have fun with cover songs in the past, and though her latest cover isn’t particularly unusual, the explanation for it is a little unexpected. Apparently, Clark is a big football fan, and she recorded a predictably kick-ass version of “The Star-Spangled Banner” for a series of NFL commercials that have been popping up during the Olympics:

Now, the NFL has released a quick video of Clark talking about football, and it turns out that she likes the Dallas Cowboys so much that she dreamed of playing for them as a kid. She didn’t want to grow up and be a professional football player, though—she wanted to be involved in a Rookie Of The Year-style situation where the Cowboys were down a player and needed to pull someone out of the stands. That probably would’ve kept her from becoming a musician, though, so we’re a little thankful that it never happened. Still, with the football season kicking off soon (that’s a football pun), you never know what’ll happen.
