Star Trek 3 gets a 2016 release date
Star Trek 3 now has a release date to go with its new director. The third outing in the rebooted franchise will be drift-racing its way into theaters on July 8, 2016, courtesy of Fast & Furious director Justin Lin.
The 2016 release date will mark 50 years since the original Star Trek debuted on NBC in 1966. Presumably, the new movie will pay homage to the anniversary and celebrate Gene Roddenberry and company’s thoughtful, philosophical take on the future of humanity with some crazy spaceship stunts and bitching explosions. (Fans of self-congratulatory “50th Anniversary” vanity cards at the starts of movies are probably also in for a treat.) Plot details about the follow-up to the $467 million-grossing Star Trek Into Darkness are sparse, with rumors that the plot will feature James Kirk and crew going undercover to stop a crew of badass Romulan spaceship hijackers and their fleet of nimble, nitrous-burning shuttlecrafts remaining unconfirmed—probably because we just made them up.
