Star Wars 1313 concept art is probably better than the game would have been
Kotaku’s Luke Plunkett has posted concept art for Star Wars 1313, a video game that was canceled last year amid Disney’s takeover of Lucasfilm. The renderings of futuristics cities and military outposts were created by the Brazilian artist Bruno Werneck, who Plunkett notes has also contributed to Titanfall and Star Trek Into Darkness, among other high-profile entertainments.
The Star Wars 1313 project was unveiled at the E3 trade show in 2012 with a trailer that indicated the game would be an “Uncharted…in space!” kind of deal. Werneck’s detailed, impeccably lit pictures almost certainly write checks that Star Wars 1313 would not have been able to cash.
It’s not that 1313 necessarily would have been bad—who knows?—but it’s practically impossible for a playable 3D world to sustain the moodiness and implied intricacy of a well-executed illustration. That’s just the nature (and fun) of concept art. After all, you may recall the stir that ensued when Disney released concept art like this image prior to the release of Epic Mickey:
And this is the game we got:
So perhaps it’s okay that Star Wars 1313 lives on only as a beautiful idea, rather than as another Uncharted-style game replete with zingers like “Fresh air is overrated”:
