Step aside, Damon: It’s Bradley Cooper’s turn to play an astronaut
Astronauts tend to have a long view of things. When you’ve actually taken in the view of the entire planet from outer space, it’s probably a little easier to have a broader perspective. Luckily, the rest of us here on Earth suffer from no such compunctions, meaning no sooner do we have one movie star portray an astronaut to critical and commercial acclaim than we’re bored with it, and ready for the next one. So see you later, Matt Damon in The Martian—America is ready for its next fake NASA employee. And, according to The Wrap, the movie star for the job is Bradley Cooper.
Cooper is set to star in Deeper, the upcoming sci-fi thriller written by Max Landis (Chronicle, American Ultra) and directed by Kornél Mundruczó, who last helmed the horror curiosity White God. Cooper will play Eddie Breen, a “disgraced astronaut who embarks on a mission to reach the bottom of a newly-discovered oceanic trench, which some speculate may be the lowest point on Earth. Facing great danger, he quickly finds himself in a physical and psychological fight against mysterious forces.” So, not only is Matt Damon no longer the actor-astronaut du jour, but the Marianas Trench is so, like, five minutes ago. There’s no release date yet, but presumably it will come out some time after its first two installments, Truer and Madder.
