Step Up is becoming a YouTube TV show

Having gotten as big as it can probably get—what with the last movie bringing most of the franchise’s decade-spanning cast together for a toe-tapping throwdown nearly buried in Vegas glitz—the Step Up series is suddenly going small. Variety is reporting that YouTube has acquired the TV rights to the dance film franchise for its YouTube Red subscription service, the better to lure in the ab-loving internet hordes with some elaborately choreographed dance.

Original series star Channing Tatum—who danced his way over the bodies of his enemies to reach a position where Hollywood will let him do pretty much anything he wants—will executive produce the series, alongside his wife and former co-star Jenna Dewan Tatum, and long-time franchise producers Adam Shankman, Jennifer Gibgot and Meredith Milton. The series is expected to debut some time next year, and will be the first YouTube Red series to be based on an existing media property, rather than established YouTube stars like PewDiePie or Smosh.
