If there’s one good thing about Jon Stewart’s retirement from the public stage, it’s the way his former Daily Show disciples have spread out into the wider media, bringing with them a finely honed, bullshit-phobic point of view. And so, when a whole heaping load of manure gets dumped on the American doorstep—as it did yesterday, when footage was leaked of Republican nominee Donald Trump describing the way his celebrity status allows him to kiss and grope women without their consent—they’re on hand to open fire.
Samantha Bee came out swinging, with her Full Frontal posting a direct parody of the Trump video. “I have kind of access to men’s balls,” she’s heard saying, as the camera shows footage of a bus emblazoned with her own face. “Look at the nutsack on that guy. Like to make a hat out of those balls,” she adds, before stepping out of the bus with a perfectly captioned [smug sigh]. The finishing touch, though, is the “apology” she issued afterward, mocking Trump’s “I’m sorry if you were offended” response. (Trump later followed his initial statement up with another half of an apology, before swerving back into attacking Hillary Clinton in the exact same breath.)
Meanwhile, the Late Show’s Stephen Colbert—who recently criticized his own handling of Trump earlier in the year—went with a more low-key response, hopping on Twitter to essentially apologize for not being able to cover the video on his show. (Last night’s episode was taped the day before, due to the Columbus Day holiday.) Comfortably ensconced in his den, a cozy-but-horrified-looking Colbert listens to Trump’s remarks on his headphones, before shutting them off roughly halfway through to lay down some heat. “Here’s what I really found disgusting,” Colbert notes. “Trump says in the video, quote, ‘When you’re a star, they let you get away with anything.’ And unfortunately, that’s true, because Donald Trump is the Republican nominee. And hopefully someday, he’ll be telling the story of how he tried to fuck America, and failed.”
