Stephen Colbert doesn't think impeaching Trump would be a very good idea
Sure, he may routinely call for the ouster of America’s second-largest sentient piece of saltwater taffy (marmite-flavored, because there’s nothing appealing about it) from political office during his monologues, but it turns out Stephen Colbert is actually fairly opposed to the idea of impeaching the 45th President of the United States.
Last night on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, the late-night host interviewed journalist Diane Sawyer on a variety of topics, from her time serving in the Nixon administration to waiting tables when she was younger to reporting on the #metoo movement. As is mostly unavoidable when talking politics, the conversation quickly came around to Trump, whom Sawyer had interviewed way back in 1999, when the idea of taking a Trump run for the presidency was treated about as seriously as it was in…well, basically every day right up until shit got real. And after Sawyer affirms that the man was pretty consistent on certain issues from back in the day on through to the present (China, trade, North Korea), Colbert chimes in to make a fairly serious point about what strategies should be taken to get Trump out of office—namely, his distaste for the idea of impeachment.
“Some people are calling for his impeachment,” Colbert tells the journalist. “I don’t actually think that’s that great of an idea because I think if Donald Trump should leave office, it should be through political means, not necessarily through judicial or extreme constitutional remedies.” It’s a point of view that you can either interpret as sensible realpolitik that takes into account broad-based notions of legitimacy and fairness, or as wishy-washy liberal nonsense, depending on your political biases. (Or you could interpret it as “fake news,” if you’re an idiot.) Sawyer smoothly bypassed the chance to weigh in, instead asking how Colbert—only nine when the Nixon Watergate hearings began—even remembered the Nixon administration. “Fondly, at this point,” he retorts.
