Stephen Colbert’s Tolkien nerdery put in service of justice

On last night’s Late Show, Stephen Colbert put his extreme J.R.R. Tolkien geekery to good use, coming to the defense of a Turkish man who’s in hot water for comparing his country’s president to Gollum from Lord Of The Rings. In both a desk piece and a sketch that found Colbert aping Gregory Peck in To Kill A Mockingbird, the host stood up for Dr. Bilgin Ciftci, who used Twitter to post a meme he created with pictures of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and—as it turns out—Smeagol, Gollum’s much calmer, kinder alter ego. Colbert does a great job explaining the whole thing below, and his intense knowledge about Middle-earth is charming as hell. Here’s hoping CBS’ streaming website works over in Turkey.
