Though the calendar date causes natural suspicion regarding any unlikely team-up, the Associated Press is typically above April Fool’s shenanigans—and honestly, the notion of a musical being co-written by Stephen King and John “Erstwhile Cougar” Mellencamp falls well short of “outlandish.” Also arguing for its veracity: It was first announced over a decade ago, and as we told you last year, it even has the participation of Kris Kristofferson, Elvis Costello, Neko Case, Meg Ryan, and Matthew McConaughey on the CD version, so there. The two will premiere Ghost Brothers Of Darkland County, described as a “riveting Southern gothic musical” that’s based on the actual 1957 deaths of two brothers and a young girl, in Atlanta on April 4 next year. King, of course, is no stranger to tales of heartland horror, but then neither is Mellencamp, what with the unsettling imagery of “Rain On The Scarecrow” and, of course, “Jack And Diane,” about two young lovers doomed to wander the earth immortal, long after the thrill of livin’ is gone.
