Steve Carell and Sandra Bullock reportedly attached to star in Tom Perrotta's The Abstinence Teacher

Steve Carell and Sandra Bullock have reportedly agreed to star in the long-rumored film adaptation of Tom Perrotta’s The Abstinence Teacher, which co-directors Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris announced as their next project a mere five months after the 2006 success of Little Miss Sunshine, when the world was still their quirky little oyster. While the project has been missing in action for some four years now, Production Weekly claims it is now back on, with Bullock attached to play the divorced, beleagured sex ed teacher who falls in love with Carell’s soccer coach, who’s also “a former stoner and rocker” turned born-again Christian. The two are naturally at odds with each other, with Bullock squaring off against Carell’s evangelical organization over her “pleasure is good, shame is bad” approach to teaching, but they eventually find love—or at least, the kind of love characters in Tom Perrotta novels tend to find—after “a controversy on the soccer field” brings them closer. Perrotta, who previously adapted his own Little Children for the screen, is still attached to write the screenplay; Dayton and Faris have worked with Perrotta before, producing both Children and the film version of Election.

Of course, before they can get to Abstinence, there’s still the matter of Will, Dayton and Faris’ purported next film starring Zach Galifianakis and Paul Rudd that’s based on a Demetri Martin screenplay with Adam McKay and Will Ferrell producing. Which insanely zeitgeist-y project will they tackle first?
