Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks fight the Cold War in the Bridge Of Spies trailer

From the look of it, the upcoming Bridge Of Spies is basically two Steven Spielberg movies for the price of one, combining the director’s taste for globetrotting mid-20th century intrigue (see: Catch Me If You Can, Munich) with his penchant for staging trials and negotiations that become referenda on underlying values (see: Amistad, Lincoln). This is Spielberg’s take on the Cold War, as seen through the eyes of James B. Donovan (Tom Hanks), the lawyer who (unsuccessfully) defended Soviet spy Rudolf Abel (Mark Rylance) in federal court and later negotiated his exchange for captured U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers (Austin Stowell).

Though longtime collaborator John Williams’ name is sadly absent from the credits, Bridge Of Spies does find Spielberg joining forces with two other major figures of American film: Joel and Ethan Coen, who co-wrote the script with Matt Charman. The movie is set to open in the U.S. on October 16th.
