Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One has a release date

It’s only been in the works for a few months, but it seems that—unlike Robopocalypse, or any number of other projects to which Spielberg’s name gets attached—this particular film is actually happening. Deadline reports Ready Player One, Spielberg’s adaptation of Ernest Cline’s bestselling sci-fi novel, is scheduled for a December 15, 2017 release date, meaning instead of reading about a kid playing video games, you’ll get to watch a kid play video games, an activity universally agreed upon as being the most fun.

The story revolves around a young boy who has to battle his way through a series of virtual reality video games, searching for clues to a grand prize. The whole plot is rife with homages to old-school games, even though that sort of thing hasn’t done so well at the box office lately. Of course, that was before Spielberg took a crack at the subject, meaning we can probably just replace all the fart jokes in Pixels with father-son issues and we’re halfway there.
