Stevie Wonder joins Madonna in tribute to Prince at the Billboard Music Awards

The Billboard Music Awards ceremony was held last night, and saw Adele and The Weeknd take turns taking the stage to accept most of the awards. It also featured Madonna’s tribute to the late, great Prince, of which few details had been made available. Everyone was pretty sure it would feature Prince’s signature royal hue would be featured prominently, but would Madonna just string together some of his greatest hits for a standard medley, or would she attempt something a little less ordinary? The result was a little from column A and a little from column B, though both columns were pretty similar. The Material Girl donned an ornate suit—complete with ruffles—to sing “Nothing Compares 2 U” and “Purple Rain,” the latter of which saw some surprise accompaniment from Stevie Wonder

Despite the suit and the velvet throne, it was a pretty stripped-down performance, an aesthetic that carried over into the cover of Bob Dylan’s “It Ain’t Me, Babe” by Kesha and Ben Folds, a collaboration the pair debuted last week. Other highlights included Rihanna belting out her Anti track “Love On The Brain,” and Britney Spears paying tribute Britney Spears.
