Stranger Things 3: The Game trailer reveals release date, 12 playable characters
In a bold strategy that suits the era, Netflix will accompany the release of Stranger Things’ third season with a video game, one that mirrors the events of the third season. Sure, the first two seasons received similar games from game studio BonusXP, but those were limited to mobile devices. This third installment is heading to the Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Mac, and PC, as well as mobile, and is said to be “a larger, more inclusive experience,” one that features “all of the season’s content and places, where true fans can dive into the things that happen off-screen.”
We got a brief look at the game back in December, but a new trailer has surfaced, as has more information about its gameplay. Polygon reports that players will get to choose from 12 different characters, some of whom are new to the series. Each come equipped with unique stats—Billy, as the trailer demonstrates, is your go-to for smoldering sex appeal—and can be controlled solo or with pals in a drop-in/drop-out local co-op mode.
As you’ll see, the trailer purposely echoes the season’s previously released trailer, rendering Eleven’s first trip to the Starcourt Mall and Steve and Dustin’s burgeoning bromance in soul-warming 16-bit graphics. We’re sure the eagle-eyed might even be able to discern a new detail or two from the above footage.
The game drops on July 4, the same day as the season.
