Though ostensibly released exclusively to Samsung phones on the Fourth of July, Jay-Z’s new album, Magna Carta Holy Grail, is now streaming online for free thanks to some savvy hackers. A cloned version of the Magna Carta app popped up on a bunch of third-party sites this weekend, complete with some doctored wallpaper lambasting the Obama administration’s digital surveillance policies. After a couple days of the album being out there, HOVA’s label, Roc-A-Fella/Universal, put the record up on Spotify, lest it lose any fractions of pennies to non-sanctioned streams. As a result, you can listen to the whole thing below.
The Magna Carta Samsung app was already rubbing some Samsung users the wrong way, given its requests to “modify or delete contents of your USB storage,” prevent your phone from sleeping, access “precise GPS locations,” and “read phone status and identity,” among other things. Even Killer Mike voiced his ire at the app’s long-reaching digital tentacles, tweeting a screenshot of the requested permissions with the caption, “I read this and……..’Naw I’m cool’.”
