Student games academia with powerful, one-line essay on Fight Club
How much effort have we put into trying to worm out of assignments? Sometimes, it would seem, the path to our slacker dreams is in the assignment itself. A college student named Allison Garret proved as much with one particularly clever spin on a class’ mandated movie review. It involves Fight Club and the one thing you can’t do with it. However, we’re breaking that rule right now.
As you’ll see in the below tweet, she took the opportunity waiting for any student tasked with writing about Fight Club. “The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club,” she wrote, adding at the bottom, “That’s it. That’s the essay.”
Garret knew this was a risk, so in submitting it to her teacher she explained that gags like this come just once in a lifetime. To the professor’s credit, she got a perfect score (and passed the class with an A). He wrote back, “I struggled over this grade for a long time. I finally decided you get a grade for a laugh and how relevant your review is for this particular movie.” What a win for students, and Fight Club fans, everywhere, although she did break the cardinal rule to her 188,000 Twitter users. Tyler Durden would not be impressed.
