Studs Terkel, 1912-2008

Sad breaking news: Legendary Chicago writer Studs Terkel has died at 96, according to news reports. According to one report, he died peacefully at home.

Terkel is synonymous with his adopted hometown, where he found acclaim with the oral-history format that became his signature in books like The Good War, Working, and Hard Times. And he never stopped—despite his advanced age, Terkel was working until the end: His new book, P.S. Further Thoughts From A Lifetime Of Listening, comes out next week.

The Chicago Tribune has a nice overview of his life here.
