Sundance Film Festival unveils its midnight movie lineup

Next year’s Sundance Film Festival will feature evil clowns, snarky convenience store clerks, and conspiracy-obsessed stoners. Although that sounds like it could be the premise of Kevin Smith’s entry alone, it’s actually the complete lineup for the festival’s Midnight Film Section. The nine selections include Smith’s “feature-length playdate,” Yoga Hosers, which stars Harley Quinn Smith and Lily-Rose Depp as two yoga-obsessed teens who, along with holding down part-time jobs, must also rid the world of some ancient evil. Yes, that’s Smith’s daughter as one of the two leads, and yes, that’s Johnny Depp’s daughter as her chakra-loving pal. Depp himself appears in the film though not as himself, unless he’s taken to dressing like a weirdo.

Elsewhere on the list is Rob Zombie’s ode to the vox populi (and murderous clowns), 31. The kid-tested, FanBacked-approved film stars Zombie-movie vets Malcolm McDowell and Meg Foster (They Live), two of the inhabitants of Murder World, which is some kind of evil-clown haven. Sheri Moon Zombie will be forced to play their “violent game” of 31, presumably with other city folk who took a wrong turn somewhere and ended up in backwoods hell. The Sundance sidebar will also see Chad Michael Murray and Luke Wilson play a game of frontier cat-and-mouse in Outlaws And Angels, and Natasha Lyonne investigate a possible alien invasion in Danny Perez’s Antibirth. The festival runs from January 21-31, and you can check out the complete Midnight Film Section here.
