Super Troopers 2’s crowdfunding campaign ends with over $4 million donated
Here’s a lesson about why you should never underestimate how willing some people are to throw their money at something, especially if those people sometimes like to get really high and watch movies about people that also sometimes like to get really high. The Indiegogo campaign to pay for Super Troopers 2 ended on Friday, and now that all of the smoke has cleared (get it?), the project has been officially declared the second-most successful crowdfunding campaign for a film ever. In about a month, the Broken Lizard comedy team managed to raise over $4 million—which is just shy of the $5.7 million that the Veronica Mars movie raised, and a bit higher than Zach Braff’s Wish I Was Here.
The team was only looking to get $2 million (which it made in about a day), so with all of the extra money, the Broken Lizard guys—Jay Chandrasekhar, Kevin Heffernan, Steve Lemme, Paul Soter, and Erick Stolhanske—were able to add a handful of bonus rewards, including a free copy of their first movie (Tinfoil Monkey Agenda) and a making-of documentary. Unfortunately, the campaign fell about $600,000 short of being able to afford a live bear, a “kickass chase scene,” and the return of Brian Cox’s Captain O’Hagan. Now they’ll have to make do with a fake bear, an average chase scene, and someone who isn’t Brian Cox threatening to pistol whip people for saying “shenanigans.”
Thanks to the generosity of all you goofy stoners, Super Troopers 2 will go into production this summer.
