Sure looks like James Comey has a secret Twitter account where he follows The Onion
Last night, FBI director James Comey casually revealed that he has low-key, extremely private accounts on both Instagram and Twitter. It would make sense for someone in his position to keep an eye on these platforms and even to casually enjoy using them, but the notion of him keeping them secret was too good for Gizmodo’s Ashley Feinberg to not follow up on. She found what sure looks like his account for both platforms within a few hours, because you can’t keep a goddamn thing for yourself on the internet.
She goes into the full procedure for her exposé here, including such steps as 1) finding Comey’s son on Instagram, and 2) having Instagram then suggest Comey’s private account to her. Interestingly, on both accounts, he uses the handle Reinhold Niebuhr, an influential theologian and political philosopher on whom Comey wrote his senior thesis in college. There are, surprisingly, not a ton of Twitter accounts named after the author of 1932’s Moral Man And Immoral Society: A Study Of Ethics And Politics, and only one that is a Twitter egg named @projectexile7, which is also the name of a program Comey worked on early in his career. It has zero tweets.
Comey—or the Twitter egg that seems very much to be James Comey—only follows 27 accounts, most of which are journalists and government organizations. But he does make room for one bit of levity in his Twitter diet by following our colleagues at The Onion. Perhaps, like Sean Spicer, he doesn’t read them very closely. Or, if you scan the tea leaves of the 39 posts he has liked on Twitter, many of which cast a skeptical eye toward the Trump administration and its key figures, perhaps he appreciates their incisiveness. Either way, it’s a shame he can’t follow Spicer’s lead and have years of pissy tweets for us to make fun of.
