Surrealist horror web series Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared is coming back

Yesterday, surrealist British web series Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared posted the first trailer for their upcoming episode—or, more likely, episodes. For those that haven’t experienced the frightening horror show firsthand, DHMIS presents itself as a children’s show, complete with puppets, claymation, and catchy songs about creativity, love, and proper diet. But at around the halfway point of each episode, our main characters Yellow Guy, Red Guy, and Duck Guy are thrown into a vortex of psychological trauma and graphic violence. It’s a lot of fun!

The last episode, “Dreams,” premiered on YouTube just over two years ago, and seemed to bring the whole series full circle. In the final frames, we saw the characters (or some version of them) reverting to their original positions from the first episode, implying that the whole thing was some sort of cyclical nightmare. But this trailer’s title, “Wakey Wakey,” seems to imply that there are plenty more scary adventures to be had when you wake up and find yourself in a place called Clayhill.

Beyond that, the content of these forthcoming episodes remains a mystery. (Update: A full series is in the works, but it doesn’t have a channel or platform just yet.) The series’ creators Becky Sloan and Joe Pelling aren’t saying a word on Twitter, but are instead letting the video speak for itself.

Conan O’Brien’s production company Conaco and Turner Broadcasting’s Super Deluxe have both come on board as producers but, as of yet, neither company has made a public statement regarding the project. There’s not even a release date attached to the trailer! But, such is the nature of DHMIS. The series has been shrouded in mystery and symbolism for the past seven years, why would new episodes be any different?

If you’re interested in getting a primer on what might actually be going on in this series—or maybe just need something to hold you over until the first new episode airs—we’d recommend these videos from The Film Theorists. Good luck sleeping!
