Susie Bright, a pro-sex feminist and one-time advice columnist for the lesbian porn mag On Our Backs, cuts loose in her appropriately titled Sexual State Of The Union. In it, Bright covers every topic imaginable, from the receding AIDS crisis to the milk-carton missing-kid scare. She delivers plenty of torrential tirades, too, but they're tempered with anecdotes from her life as well as solid, well-reasoned arguments. It's easy to bristle at some of her opinions—like her counter-reaction to the "coming out" scare which followed the killing of a lesbian couple in rural Oregon—until you get about half-way through her arguments. At that point, you realize there are new ways to think about these matters rather than reacting with dogmatic poses. It is the dogma, the scares and the ignorance which Bright combats so ardently and effectively; her essays are as entertaining as they are informative, and it's especially refreshing to hear someone fighting to wrest sex discussions out of the hands of the theorists and back into the mouths of the sexual of all persuasions.
