SXSW’s full film lineup to feature Linklater, Pee-Wee Herman, Tony Robbins
The South By Southwest Film Festival has announced this year’s slate of films, putting together a schedule that’s led—as previously announced—by Richard Linklater’s Everybody Wants Some. Linklater’s new film—which he’s been describing for years as either a follow-up to Dazed & Confused or Boyhood, depending on the weather—is joined by a pretty wide array of new fare, including films from Mike Birbiglia, horror director Ti West, and Paul Reubens, debuting his new Pee-Wee Herman movie.
Directed by weird-TV mastermind John Lee (Wonder Showzen, The Heart. She Holler), Pee-Wee’s Big Holiday sees everyone’s favorite non-Thriller-composing manchild have “a fateful meeting with a mysterious stranger” that inspires him to take the titular vacation. Meanwhile, West—whose credits include 2011’s well-regarded The Innkeepers—is bringing his vengeance thriller In A Valley Of Violence to the festival, where attendees will get to scope out Ethan Hawke and Doctor Who’s Karen Gillan as they get involved with a good old-fashioned roaring rampage of revenge.
On the lighter side, there’s the Birbiglia-directed Don’t Think Twice, which sees Keegan-Michael Key lead a cast that includes Gillian Jacobs, Kate Micucci, and Chris Gethard as comedy improvisers who need a suggestion of somewhere else to perform after they lose the lease on their home theater. Or, if you’re into cultish fanatacism but don’t want to see anyone mime having sex on a stage, there’s Tony Robbins: I Am Not Your Guru, in which director Joe Berlinger gives the Metallica: Some Kind Of Monster treatment to the gigantic, Shallow Hal-starring motivational speaker.
As there is every year, there are more interesting films at SXSW this time—James Caan’s fake haunting movie The Waiting, Michael Peña’s dark drug war comedy War On Everyone, the Gary Numan doc Android In La La Land—than there is time to watch them, but you can see the whole list—and its cold reminder that time, and your life, are finite—over at Deadline.
