Channel Zero: Candle Cove (Syfy, 9 p.m.): We’re just 20 days from Halloween, so expect a lot of spooky recommendations (and the odd scary name-pun here and there) in the upcoming Tuesday editions of What’s On Tonight. First up is Syfy’s horror nutso-looking anthology series, Channel Zero. Taking a note from American Horror Story, each season will focus on a different arc, with the first six episodes adapting Kris Straub’s creepypasta, Candle Cove. We know what you’re thinking, and no, Kris Straub isn’t related to horror novelist Peter Straub. Let’s hope Emily “Hell” Stephens knows that before diving in for a pre-air review.
Black Market: Dispatches (Viceland, 10 p.m.): On the latest episode of Viceland’s breakout series, the real-life subjects have to deal with horrors that are much more realistic and sobering. This installment, called “Vietnam’s Transgender Underground,” focuses on that country’s ostracized trans community, shunned to the point where they have to resort to illegal hormone and cosmetic treatments. Michael K. Williams hosts.
Deadliest Catch: Dungeon Cove (Discovery, 9 p.m.): Ensuring Channel Zero doesn’t corner the market on shows with “cove” in their subtitle, Deadliest Catch continues their season-long focus on families of fishermen along the tumultuous stretch of ocean dubbed the Graveyard Of The Pacific. Peril and fishing villages, eh? Sounds familiar.
Premieres and finales
Fresh Off The Boat (ABC, 9 p.m.): When viewers last checked in with the Huangs, they were on the way to their native Taiwan so Louis could make up with his brother, Gene (Ken Jeong), and attend his wedding. Although ABC missed the opportunity for a FOTB/Dr. Ken crossover, the season-three premiere is still exciting for its new location. This is the first time an American show has been filmed in the capital city of Taipei, which also makes it the first time an American critic (Dan Caf-“freak”) has done a drop-in review on one.
The Real O’Neals (ABC, 9:30 p.m.): It seems ABC was able to recover from the minor bit of controversy surrounding its Dan Savage-produced sitcom, and it’s back for a full second season. That means The A.V. Club will be posting regular reviews from Ashley “Slay”-Harris. It looks like this first episode centers around Kenny’s attempts to start the first LGBT club at school in honor of National Coming Out Day.
Halt And Catch Fire (AMC, 10:01 p.m.): Last week Dennis “Purr”-kins (as in a spooky black cat) noted how the penultimate evening of Halt And Catch Fire’s third season, in many ways, felt like a proper ending. So who knows what will be in store for the two-part finale? And, in keeping with the grimness of last week’s episode, this may be the final night of new Halt And Catch installments ever (depending on ratings), thus making it a must-watch for fans of the series. Keep those fingers crossed for a renewal. With a little bit of luck, maybe the show can get around to weaving the dawn of social media into the story.
