Take a drive through Edgar Wright’s 50 favorite songs of the year
Not every great filmmaker has great taste, but there are particular artists who’ve established themselves as tastemakers over the years. One of them is Baby Driver director and pop culture omnivore Edgar Wright, who, lucky for us, enjoys chronicling his favorites in comprehensive lists. Recently, Wright shared with the internet his 1,000 favorite movies and 100 favorite horror movies (he also curated a 24-hour horror marathon for us back in 2011), and now the English filmmaker’s back with his favorite songs of 2017, an especially apt list considering his latest opus was basically a musical dressed up like a heist film.
On it you’ll find plenty of the year’s biggest names, both in the mainstream—Gorillaz, Drake, Kendrick Lamar, St. Vincent—and the indie scene—Broken Social Scene, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, Perfume Genius, King Krule. You’ll also see as some English acts, like Superfood and The Big Moon, that haven’t gotten much play across the pond. He’s even corralled it all into a nifty Spotify playlist for easy streaming. Enjoy—just don’t try to sync it up with gunfire or anything. Leave that to the professionals.
