Take that, Gunsmoke: The Simpsons renewed for record-breaking 30th season

Earlier today, Fox announced that it was making the unsurprising move of renewing its beloved comedy institution, useful quote generator, and online argument starter The Simpsons for the show’s 29th and 30th seasons. But while Simpsons renewals are basically boilerplate by now, the announcement does carry a pretty staggering achievement along with it. By bumping the show up by another 44 episodes—to a total of 669—The Simpsons is now set to surpass Gunsmoke’s record as the longest-running scripted series in the history of TV.

“Take that Gunsmoke!” Homer Simpson said in a statement released with the renewal. “You lost a race you didn’t even know you were running!” The CBS Western ran from 1955 until 1975, amassing a total of 635 episodes. The Simpsons, meanwhile, is coming up on its 27th episode, and still hasn’t done that episode where Moe gets a cell phone.
