Talking about rape and dismemberment "doesn't interest" Tyler, The Creator anymore
Odd Future became one of the biggest music stories of 2011 after the L.A. hip-hop collective was hyped as the latest in a long line of provocateurs intent on shaking up the system, man. "Kill People, Burn Shit, Fuck School," in other words. These guys were supposed to be dangerous, and if you weren't on board with that, you were either lame or old. But as the year draws to a close, Odd Future (or the group's handlers) apparently realized that it can play "Oops, I Crapped My Pants" with its media enablers for only so long before it becomes a tired shtick, and then finally an artistic and professional dead end. So now we have things like this Spin cover story, which bends over backward to show how cute and cuddly these kids are. Because you see, these guys aren't dangerous, and if you're not on board with that, you're either lame or old.
Only a moron would believe that Tyler, The Creator actually violates pregnant women by violent force when he's not appearing in ersatz Baywatch parodies. But now he's publicly stating that he's moved on from joking about such things on his forthcoming album, Wolf, due in 2012. "Talking about rape and cutting bodies up, it just doesn't interest me anymore," Tyler told Spin, which underlined how totally serious he was by describing him as "contemplative and sincere," and "looking directly into [the reporter's] eyes."
So what's going to fill the sexual assault-shaped hole in Tyler's music? "What interests me is making weird hippie music for people to get high to. With Wolf, I'll brag a little bit more, talk about money and buying shit. But not like any other rapper, I'll be a smart-ass about it." Whoa, you mean this will be rap music that sounds good when you're smoking weed, and it will discuss the MC's finances in an irreverent way? This truly will re-define hip-hop as we know it. [via Spin]
