Tangerine trailer: Transgender prostitutes seek revenge, shot entirely on an iPhone

Director Sean Baker (Starlet) has made low-budget films before, but his latest takes that frugality to an unprecedented extreme. Tangerine, a drama about two transgender prostitutes played by Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor, both making their film debuts, was shot entirely on an iPhone. The main story follows Sin-Dee (Rodriguez), recently released from a month-long stint in jail, seeking revenge on her pimp boyfriend (The Wire’s James Ransone) for cheating on her. The film alternates Sin-Dee’s trek across Los Angeles—with best friend Alexandria (Taylor) alternately supporting her and reigning her in—with the story of an Armenian cab driver (Karren Karagulian, who previously worked with Baker in Starlet) taking fares throughout the day. Executive produced by Jay and Mark Duplass, the film was a hit at Sundance, where it was snapped up by Magnolia Pictures. Tangerine opens July 10.
