First it was going to be a movie, which is the thing Quentin Tarantino is known for making. Then the Hateful Eight script leaked, and Tarantino freaked out and decided he’d rather not make it at all. In a bloody second-act twist, the director then decided that he would do a staged reading of the script, exactly once, and charge people a whole bunch of money to enjoy the privilege of hearing it performed on stage with the likes of Samuel L. Jackson, Tim Roth, and Kurt Russell. (The money would go to a good cause, it should be noted.) That staged reading happened in Los Angeles over the weekend, and Deadline is reporting that Tarantino all but said that he was, in fact, going to make the movie after all. “I’m working on a second draft and I will do a third draft, but we’re reading from the first draft. The Chapter Five here will not be the Chapter Five later, so this will be the only time it is seen ever.” So in that sense, this crowd was privy to something incredibly exclusive—the live performance of a draft of a Tarantino movie that wasn’t going to be a movie but now might once again be a movie. Maybe. Other live readers included Walton Goggins, James Parks, Amber Tamblyn, Michael Madsen, Bruce Dern, and James Remar.
