Taylor Swift takes the stand in groping trial
Though it looked like Taylor Swift might find it difficult to find justice because the Denver court system was finding it nearly impossible to fill out the jury, her civil suit against former radio DJ David Mueller is now underway. Swift was forced to take legal action against Mueller for a couple of reasons: First of all, he filed suit against her for costing him his job and/or damaging his reputation. Of course, that only came about because Mueller allegedly reached under Swift’s skirt at a meet-and-greet in 2013. The singer said she was in shock after the alleged groping, and went through the motions for the rest of the event. But ultimately, one of her reps reported the incident to Mueller’s superiors at KYGO-FM, and he was fired. Then came his lawsuit, which was followed by her countersuit, and finally, Swift’s appearance in court today.
CNN reports that Swift didn’t mince words while being questioned on the stand by Gabe McFarland, Mueller’s attorney. She called what the former radio host did “very intentional,” telling defense counsel that she was “critical of your client for sticking his hand under my skirt and grabbing my ass.” Swift kept up the snark when McFarland tried to bullshit her about the photo they took at the 2013 meet-and-greet, suggesting they looked chummy enough. “Gabe, this is a photo of him with his hand up my skirt—with his hand on my ass,” Swift snapped back. “You can ask me a million questions—I’m never going to say anything different. I never have said anything different.” Swift then showed an inordinate amount of patience (and sass), explaining basic anatomy to the attorney by explaining the reason the photo isn’t direct evidence of the groping is “because my ass is located in the back of my body.”
BuzzFeed reporter Claudia Rosenbaum has more of Swift’s greatest hits from today’s proceedings. The singer’s been in court every day since the trial began, something she hopes will “serve as an example to other women who may resist publicly reliving similar outrageous and humiliating acts.” Despite the snappy retorts, though, it does sound like it’s been a harrowing experience, especially for her mom, who described wanting to throw up upon hearing her daughter had allegedly been groped.
