The Oscars (understandably) seem kinda meaningless to many, but every year the Academy's Scientific and Technical categories provide some helpful ideas for making them exciting again. According to the Hollywood Reporter, special-effects folks gathered earlier this week to demonstrate their skill by lighting themselves on fire (when was the last time Paul Haggis did that, folks?) and taking other such risks. The Sci-Tech Oscars would put the regular-Oscar contenders to shame each year if they weren't awarded at a separate ceremony (we hear they're splurging on a very nice cold-cuts platter and a clown this year).
