Ted Cruz got in one last awkward pop culture reference for the road

Like a distant acquaintance who talks exclusively in Simpsons quotes, or a badly overused Princess Bride impression, it appears that Ted Cruz has officially worn out his welcome. According to CNN, Cruz officially suspended his bid for the presidency tonight, after losing the Indiana primary to orange-faced cartoon rich person Donald Trump.

But true to his nature, Cruz couldn’t leave the field of battle without tossing out one more reminder that he is a human being, who has seen and enjoyed the films and TV shows his fellow human beings also love. Speaking at a campaign stop a few hours before his eventual defeat, Cruz went on the attack against Trump, as couched in a reference to Back To The Future Part II.

“We are looking, potentially, at the Biff Tannen presidency,” Cruz told reporters, referring to the fact that screenwriter Bob Gale has said he based the alternate, even-more-evil version of the famous bully on Trump. “A caricature of a braggadocious, arrogant buffoon who builds giant casinos with giant pictures of him everywhere he looks,” he added, managing the very Ted Cruz trick of accurately describing Donald Trump while still somehow coming off the worst in the affair. Meanwhile, you can watch the people around him—including hypothetical running mate Carly Fiorina—make some pretty priceless, “Oh, God, not again,” expressions as soon as Cruz starts in on the phrase, “If anyone has seen the movie…”
