Television Critics Association declares Gotham the year’s “most promising” new show

Every year, the Television Critics Association gets together in one of its members’ living rooms and decides which new Fall shows are going to be the best. We’re not sure how it comes to its decisions, but we imagine there are a lot of dartboards and gut feelings involved. Either way, the TCA has spoken, and it has declared that Gotham—Fox’s Batman show that isn’t about Batman—is both the year’s “Most Promising New Show” and also the “Most Promising New Drama.” This isn’t the TCA’s first ride on the superhero bandwagon either, as it actually named Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. the “Most Promising New Show” last year.

As for other awards, the TCA says ABC’s Black-ish is the “Most Promising New Comedy,” and Jane The Virgin’s Gina Rodriguez is the “Potential New Breakout Star.” Gotham’s Robin Lord Taylor, who plays the show’s not-yet-The-Penguin, actually came in third place for that last category, so maybe if he had a little more potential—and if Gotham were somehow a comedy and a drama—he could’ve helped it sweep the whole thing. For now, though, we just have to sit back and see if Gotham lives up to the hype. If it doesn’t, we can blame TV critics.
