Tenacious D offers some sex advice
In Hear This, A.V. Club writers sing the praises of songs they know well—some inspired by a weekly theme and some not, but always songs worth hearing. This week, we asked, “What song makes you laugh?”
As a fan of the short-lived Tenacious D HBO series, I was pretty excited when the duo finally released a proper album in 2001; up until then, I’d been making do with a bootleg CD of audio someone recorded off the TV show itself. Once I heard the album, though, I was a little bummed out. Much of Tenacious D’s charm lay in the ramshackle setup of Jack Black, Kyle Gass, and a pair of guitars. Tenacious D was a full-on, heavily produced rock album, which expanded some of those goofy ditties into arena rock. (Granted, Tenacious D had always presented itself as an arena-ready band, but that was the joke.)
I still enjoyed Tenacious D quite a bit, but it’s not surprising that my favorite of the new material was a back-to-D-basics song called “Fuck Her Gently” that kept it to guitar, vocals, and a dash of syrupy strings. The title pretty much says it all, and the lyrics offer some sage advice for bangin’: “You don’t always have to fuck her hard / in fact, sometimes that’s not right to do / sometimes you got to make some love / and fuckin’ give her some smooches too / sometimes you got to squeeze / sometimes you got to say ‘please’ / sometime you got to say ‘Hey, I’m gonna fuck you softly’ / ‘I’m gonna screw you gently’ / ‘I’m gonna hump you sweetly’ / ‘I’m gonna ball you discreetly.’”
“Fuck Her Gently” preceded the album with an awesome animated video by John Kricfalusi of Ren And Stimpy fame (NSFW, obviously):
My then-girlfriend was named Sally, so the “Wait a minute, Sally” line felt like a little bonus for us, and we felt compelled to include “Fuck Her Gently” in the mix we made for our wedding reception a couple years later. I was really hoping to get a bunch of people slow-dancing to “Fuck Her Gently,” but it didn’t happen. Maybe my daughter will want to play it at her reception if she ever marries.
